What is Shape Memory?

SMAs

Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are a class of smart materials that exhibit two important characteristics; shape memory and superelastic behaviors. Shape memory is a property of SMAs that have the ability to “remember” the shape given during original thermomechanical processing allowing the material to revert back to that original shape when subjected to heat.
Shape memory response allows for the creation of smart, lightweight solid-state devices that have better capabilities over the conventional systems.
